Amber Necklace-The Other Side of the World

If you are a lover of Amber, then sweetie your ships come in! This is by far and away the finest Amber I have ever seen. For those of you unfamiliar with Amber, and the lore surrounding it, here’s your mini-lesson (I am a University Professor after all):

Amber is not a mineral, as it began as amorphous resin. In fact, it is actually a "glob" of fossilized tree resin or sap that flowed down an ancient coniferous tree trunk in an ancient forest. The tree sap was sticky, and it caught organic materials: drops of water, bits of moss, dirt, bark, seeds and insects. As it grew older, it hardened into a sort of Mother-Nature-made plastic, a resin, and mellowed into a golden, light brown-orange color known as Amber. The more clear the resin, the more perfect the color, the fuller of organic materials the amber is, the more it is worth. Amber is considered a gemstone--an organic gemstone like a pearl, which is generated from biological processes. Most of the world's true amber ranges between 30 to 90 million years old.

Amber perfectly preserves insects from decomposition--even their soft tissues are preserved. As seen in the movie Jurassic Park, mosquitoes can still have the blood of their victims inside them, sealed and kept intact forever. It's no wonder Amber is a symbol of eternity--and eternal divinity.

Amber represents the division between an individual's energy and cosmic energy, the individual's soul and the universal soul of all living things. Since it is the symbol of divinity, ancient painters used the color amber to denote the divine. The faces of gods and goddesses, heroes and saints were all painted amber.

As a medicine, powdered amber was mixed with honey and used as a curative for asthma, gout, and the black plague. Today amber is still used as a medicine in some countries. Amber has long been worn and carried by men, as a talisman against sexual impotence. Amber is sacred to American Indians. It is reputed to have the ability to draw disease from the body; absorb negative energy; calm nerves; give confidence; regain memory loss; reduce eccentric behavior; reduce anxiety; help with inability to make decisions; cure thyroid disorders; strengthen inner ear & neuro-tissues; activate altruistic nature and realization of the spiritual intellect.

Amber was worn as amulets to preserve chastity and used as talismans to guard against evil. Sailors believed that burning amber would keep them safe from sea monsters.

So there you have it. You’re safe from sea monsters, impotence, and all manner of maladies!

Now, on to the necklace. The Amber beads are superb. I mean really suburb. They are 12mm Dark Amber, and the finest quality I’ve ever seen. I punctuated them with Bali silver for breathing room.

The pendant is beyond words. Really. The Amber is simply set in sterling silver, and will stop you in your tracks. The size is 2.625” in length including bail, with a width of 2.125” at the widest point.

The length of the necklace, including sterling silver cones, disks, and Thai Hill Tribe silver clasp is 19”.
